Week of 9/25 - 9/29

Hello Families,

It was great seeing many of you at Open House. Thank you for coming! The third grade Academy Stars have been shining! Literacy is in full swing. Students are learning how to spell and use words with suffixes in Fundations. They have been using the suffixes s, ed, es, ing, er, est, less, and ful. Students have started their books in reading groups. Ask your child what book they are reading. Our main goal is finding evidence from the text. We are also talking about character development. Students are working on opinion writing. They are learning how to support their opinions with reasons! Students have also been reading non-fiction articles in Scholastic News.

In math, students are working on multiplying by 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, and 5’s. We are using math rotations. Students go to each station for 20 minutes. The stations include Teacher Time (Eureka lesson with me), Zearn (technology based on Eureka math), and fluency math games. This is a helpful way for me to differentiate the lessons for all of the students. We are working on using the Commutative and Distributive Properties of Multiplication.

This week in theme we focused on using grid systems and learning the cardinal/intermediate directions. Students found various locations using these tools. They also drew a picture based off of cardinal directions given by me. Next week, we will use our knowledge of geography to transition into our theme unit on weather and climate!

Book orders are due Friday, October 6th!

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Miss Plympton
