Week of 10/10-10/13

Hello Families,

We have been really busy, even during this short week! Students have been continuing to add suffixes to base words. They have been using the homophones band, banned, guest, guessed, mist, missed, son, sun, some, and sum. It would be great for you to continue having students identify the differences of these homophones at home. We will be having our Unit 2 Fundations’ Test on Tuesday!

In reading, students have been reading articles from StoryWorks Jr. We recently have read articles comparing the history of tacos and hamburgers, along with a fictional story about a boy who built a robot. Students have been working on writing opinion pieces. We read the story The Best Part of Me by Wendy Ewald. Then the students picked their favorite part about themselves. They worked on supporting their choices with three reasons and supporting details. These writing pieces will soon be in the hallway on display!

Math rotations are running very smoothly. During “Teacher Time,” students have been working on using tape diagrams and number bonds. Students then rotate to the next station, which is working on the problem set from Eureka. When they have completed their problem sets, the students go on to the technology portion, which is Zearn. The last station is the Fluency Station. Students have been working on multiplying by 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, and 5’s. They have been playing Multiplication Top It, Garbage, and Bingo. The students make their own Bingo Boards by multiplying two dice. Then they play with a partner, which leads to a lot of fact fluency practice! If you want directions to any of these games for home, I would be happy to send them to you.

In weather, students have been learning about the water cycle. We made water cycle bracelets so students could remember each part. I hope that they shared the parts of the water cycle with you! We also completed an experiment on clouds. Students created a cloud in a jar, and they came to a conclusion that clouds are made out of tiny droplets of water. Next week, we will be learning more about weather tools and identifying different types of clouds.

Remember to be reading every night and practicing multiplication facts 2-5!

Have a great weekend!

Miss Plympton
