Week of 1/8 - 1/12

Hello Families!

I hope you all had a wonderful week! The students have been extra busy during this new year. In Fundations, students have been working on reading and spelling the open syllable exception rule. Ask your child where the open syllable exceptions are in Alaska, compliment, and animal. In writing, students have started a new narrative piece called Stuck Inside a Snow Globe. Students are working on using dialogue and showing details to describe an imaginative experience. They are including how they got into the snowglobe, what their feelings are, what they are doing in the snowglobe, and how they plan to escape. There will be very creative pieces of work hanging on our bulletin board very soon!

In math, students have been working on multiplying by 6’s, 7’s, 8’s, and 9’s. I am extremely impressed with the different strategies they are using to become fluent in these facts. We have been playing a lot of math multiplication games, such as Rook, Kaboom!, and Going to Boston. These games allow for students to practice their basic multiplication facts in a really engaging way. Students also took their Winter AimsWeb Benchmarks in math this week. I saw such great improvement from everyone comparing their scores to their Fall AimsWeb Benchmark scores. You will be seeing this data on the Report Cards that will be coming home on January 26th.

We have started our new science unit on Force and Motion! Students have identified that a force is a push or pull. They know that any movement is caused by a force. We are also studying the forces of gravity, electrostaticity, and magnetism. We are completing many different science experiments to see these forces in action!

The students have finished up their Native American reports. Students typed three paragraphs based on their research, and they also constructed their Native American shelters out of recycled materials. They will be presenting their research to their classmates next week!

I hope you all have a great long weekend. Remember for your children to be practicing their multiplication facts and to be reading good fit books!

Thank you,

Miss Plympton
